OUGD502: PPP2 - Personal Branding (Final Prints - Mock Ups)

____

Photos taken on an iPhone - not the best quality.

I am really happy with the final outcome of this project, I got my branding printed by a friend at a graphic design studio with a professional printer, I wanted to do this because I think it gives me more experience with working with printers and people external to the college.

OUGD502: PPP - Dear Massimo...

____

Whilst browsing on the internet I cam across an article on Creative Review about Massimo Vignelli.

One of the world's great designers, Massimo Vignelli, is very ill and will be spending his last days at home. His son Luca would like all those for whom Vignelli was either an influence or an inspiration to write him a letter.
In honouring Massimo and Lella Vignelli with their joint award of the AIGA Medal in 1982, the institute noted of the couple that "their design output has been prodigious in quantity, far-ranging in media and scope and consistent in excellence. Equally important is the influence they have had and the difference they have made....Both in the example set by their work and by their personal commitment of time and energy, design has no advocates more passionate or effective. Both teach, write, lecture, serve on juries and boards, contribute their talent and cast to worthy causes. Unabashedly urban and urbane, their participation in the world of design is enthusiastic, inquiring, generous. The Vignellis are true believers."
According to Pentagram partner Michael Bierut, "Luca said that Massimo would be thrilled to get notes of good wishes from people whom he's touched or influenced - whether personally or remotely - over the years. Luca has visions of huge mail bags full of letters. I know that one of Massimo's biggest fantasies has been to attend his own funeral. This will be the next best thing. Pass the word."

I am a admirer of Massimo's work, especially his work on the Manhattan Subway map. I researched into him for my context of practice module this year and intend to continue into the third year. I was shocked to read the news and knew that I wanted to write a letter to him. I drafted a short letter detailing my interests and research project and sent it to him in the post. I hope that he lives long enough to read the letter because he has influenced my work massively.

Letter sent to Vignelli:

OUGD502: PPP - Personal Branding (Work Samples Booklet)

____

Work samples:

Deciding on the content of my booklet - I want to ensure that I show my full range of skills within my work samples booklet. I chose a selection of print and web based designs.

Making the booklet:

I am planning to print my publication externally to the college because I think it is important for design students to get an idea of how to work with printers. I spent alot of my time over the first and second year using custom sizes because I find it easy to work with a grid system on a square shaped publication. I wanted to challenge my skills by producing a booklet at an A5 landscape scale.

I chose a few projects to have within my booklet each use a different set of skills. I think it is important for me to showcase my strengths within my practice within my work samples booklet because this is basically me in a booklet format. I kept the layout consistent throughout the booklet and used a simple gird system throughout.

Overall I am very happy with the final outcome of my booklet and feel confident that it represents myself and my practice.

OUGD502: PPP2 - Dialogue Exhibition

__

As part of the 503 module I was able to take part in an exhibition set by two of the third year students. This exhibition was called Dialogue. I submitted two designs to the competition and had one chosen to be used in a blind collaboration.

My work in the exhibition:

Taking part in the exhibition showed me the importance of collaboration and working with other creatives. I think that our course should work cross year groups more often because it seems that alot of talent is going to waste.

OUGD502- PPP - Personal Branding (Logo)

____

Logo design:

Coming up with a logo for myself is something that I find very hard. I think it is easy to come up with branding for someone else because I am able to come to a resolution, in my case I am never fully satisfied with a logo for myself.

I started out by drawing out some variations of logos that I could use for my personal branding and then made some of them digital rather than drawing them out by hand.

Drawn:

Digital:

After looking at a few ideas I decided that I wanted to look at making my logo very simple and focusing on my name because I think that coming up with a emblem is too difficult and my name alone represents myself and my practice.

I experimented with different fonts to start with and decided on Futura. I had used Futura in a studio session with Graham Tansley and felt that it was quite striking from a distance and represented me very well.

Image from type session:

I have chosen to include this image because I think it explains why I have chosen to eperiment with a logo in this style. The photo was taken from about 3 metres away from the desk and my name is very visable as opposed to others. I think that using a bold font does not only apply to myself but also represents my personality, I would consider myself to be quite a loud person and also confident once people get to know me, I want my logo to have underlying aspects that show my personality to clients.
Using ellen. and shortening it to e. allows me to work with to a wider scale and also ensures that my logo will never be too large for printing. I think that doing this gives me a brand to work with and also options when it comes to design.

After looking at a few variations of the logo I think that lower case represents me best.

Lowercase: Small

Futura: Bold

Full stop:  To the point.

I want to play around with adding a border to my logo so that I can have a wide range of variations to use across different projects.

Logo research:

As I have to come up with a logo for myself I carried out a quick search for logos already in use.
