OUGD402 : PPP1 - Module Evaluation

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Throughout this module I have developed my skills as a designer. Before starting the course I didn't know what Graphic Design really was and the PPP module has helped me to not only identify what it is about but also what areas of design I am interested in. Saying this, my research skills have improved no end, as at the beginning of the course I was not very thorough and usually took the first example from the google search. I am now more accustomed to using Behance and Pinterest to find designers which I think has made me a better learner and much more aware of my surroundings. I also think that my presentation skills have improved massively and with this my confidence to talk about myself and design.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

Research has been a massive factor throughout this module and I think that this has helped my design development process significantly. When we were set tasks to look for blogs and studios which helped us to identify areas of design I began to notice a change within myself. I use these blogs on a daily basis for inspiration and ideas which I think has helped me to improve.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

My Strengths at this moment in time I would say is research because I feel I have improved within this sector the most. I now feel confident to be thrown into any brief and have the common sense to research thoroughly so I have a firm understanding of the subject matter.

Another strength of mine I would say is information garphics. I have liked these since the blog task and have used them a lot during the first year. For my information pack I have used information graphics primarily. I enjoy producing them and like the aesthetic when printed onto brown stock.

 4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

My weaknesses would have to be within craft. I have never been very good with my hands and building something out of paper. I feel that my information pack could have been better executed and the lines could be more angular and straight. Saying this I did enjoy making my folder and planning out the net. I do think that I would like to develop my skills within packaging and craft but I prefer to work digitally.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

  • Take more time to research blogs in more depth - A wider range of sources
  • Pay more attention to detail within craft - Professional standard
  • Time Management - Outcome will not look rushed and more attention to detail would have been paid
  • Explore other outcomes - Achieve a wider range of ideas and step out of my comfort zone
  • Experiment with web design - Appeal to a wider audience and achieve larger scale design.

OUGD402 : It's Up To You : Final Pack

This is the final information pack which I have designed for myself. I am overall very happy with it but feel that I could have improved it massively. I like the way the brown paper stock works with the black card folder and think it is very me. This is something that I want to further during the summer break simply for my own purpose.

OUGD402 : It's Up To You : Development Ideas

During my research I was thinking about the different items which I could make which links to me.

OUGD402 : PPP - If you were a...

In order to be successful within the industry it is important that we begin to think of ourselves as a commodity. It is essential that we see ourselves as part of a collective as well as an individual. This task enables us to start thinking about ourselves in this way.

If you were a...

If you were a book what would your subject be and who would read you?

I am very interested in the film industry and therefore I would probably be a series of publications reviewing films both past and present. The audience for these books would be film lovers with an interest in the specific genre of Sci-Fi and fantasy.

If you were a package what would you contain and who would open you?
If I were a package I would contain something simple and easy to use within everyday life. The package itself would be very simple with limited use of colour. I would be modern and contemporary but also simple and clear.

If you were a shop what would you sell and who would buy it?
If I were a shop I would sell the nessecieities for a wide audience an example of this would be a supermarket as it attracts a vast audience. As some supermarkets have range of different brands to appeal to different audiences, though it would seem that their main products are for middle classes, some of their products are for upper classes and with this comes a higher standard of design which I enjoy to produce.

If you were a poster what would you promote and to whom?
If I were a poster I would promote an awards ceremony such as the MTV movie awards and MTV VMA's. I would be more suited to this style as they are more mainstream and the signature which comes with the design would be more suited to myself. The audience would be younger people with an interest in the film and music industry and also celebrity culture.

If you were a brand what would your values be and why would they be important?
If I were a brand I would be Toms the shoes brand. I think this would be best suited to me because the shoes themselves are fashionable, versatile and also popular with many different people. I also value the charitable trait which comes with a pair of toms. I myself own several pairs which I wear very often (in the correct weather.)

If you were an exhibition what would you show and where would you show it?
If I were an exhibition I would show a series of Screen Prints by my favourite designer Anthony Peters. They are crisp, clear and clean which is something I strive for within my designs. The audience would be more niche than any of my other answers as not everyone is aware of different designers and also the techniques which come with their work.

If you were a leaflet what information would you contain and who would read it?
If I were a leaflet I would contain information which is very useful to a variety of people. Something in the form of a timetable or a map. I think the underground map and bus timetables would be best suited to me as they are simple and functional.

If you were a sign what would you show, to whom and where?
If I were a sign I would be a Give Way road sign. I think I would be this because I possess traits which match this road sign and it also is within a type of design I favour, information and way-finding. I would be placed wherever a give way sign is needed (globally.)

If you were an App what would you do and who would use you?
If I were an App I would be a resource full of information focussed around film and music. An example of this would be imdb and itunes. I would, again be used by a wide range of people who have an interest in film and music.

If you were a blog, what would you be about and who would follow you?
If I were a blog I would be about celebrity culture. An example of this would be JustJared. The audience would be people interested in celebrities which is usually considered to be young women aged 16-24.

If you were an event, what would it be and how would you promote it?
If I were an event I would be a film screening of a Sci-Fi fantasy drama which has been or will become popular. I would promote myself with a series of posters which would contain enigmatic quotes and words from the film.

OUGD402 - PPP1 : Studio Session

For this session we focussed on two main questions :

What makes me me?
What makes me a designer?

As a task from the previous session we were asked to provide visuals which go along with a set of statements we wrote about ourselves. We had 5 images which represented our personality and 5 which represent our professional signature and aspiration.

We were split into pairs and had to swap images with another pair. We then had half an hour to go away and look over the images and make an assumption as to what they were trying to communicate.

Rinesh and I first wrote a list of words which came to mind when we looked at the images :

Amy -

Practice

  • Commercial
  • Simple
  • Black and White
  • Editorial
  • Promotion
  • Limited Colours
Personality

  • Supports breast cancer
  • From Leeds
  • Reality TV
  • Open to interpretation
  • Free Spirit
  • Likes to cook

Sam -

Practice
  • Hand crafted
  • Editorial
  • Commercial
  • Promotion
  • Colour
Personality
  • Veggie
  • Jimmy Carr - Dry sense of humour
  • Travel
  • Nutella - Chocolate
  • Open
After coming up with the lists we had to compile the words into a statement for each :

Amy -

Practice

This person seems to be interested in simple editorial design for publications focussed around fashion and beauty. They also favour promotion design for businesses which could reflect an interest in branding. The images also seem to have a feminine feel to them.

Personality

This person is in support of breast cancer which could reflect how much she values life and wants to live it to the fullest. She is from Leeds which could mean that she prefers a city life. She is quite open and enjoys reality TV shows like Made in Chelsea.

Sam -

Practice

This person seems to be interested in mainly commercial design such as publications, editorial design and promotional graphics. There is also a slight preference of hand crafted font and type alongside this, which also links into a possible preference to work with a variety of colours.

Personality

This person has a humorous side more edged towards dry humour and has signs of affection towards Paris which could reflect their aspiration to travel. They also like Nutella, are a vegetarian and likes the ocean.

OUGD406 - What is Design Practice? Session 2

Following on from the previous PPP session we had to set out of three free ad's on the desk in front of us. After looking at the ad's we were asked to re-write two of the lists we created from the previous session.

5 Words which best describe your design practice:

  • Simple
  • Minimalistic
  • Clear
  • Black and White
  • Structured
5 words which best describe you as a person:
  • Clean
  • Tidy
  • Neat
  • Friendly
  • Thoughtful
After doing this we were asked to write 5 things which we felt the others had done which reflects on us a designer and also did not reflect us :

DO
  • Simplicity
  • Clean
  • Aligned
  • Fonts (sans serif)
  • Minimalistic
DON'T
  • Size
  • Background colour
  • Uppercase letters
  • Colour
  • Overcrowded

After doing this we had to evaluate each ad on the desk and come up with a list of words which we felt were projected through the ad's.

My Ad

  • Minimalism
  • Simplicity
  • Clean
  • Crisp
  • Structured
Laura

  • Minimalism
  • Clear
  • Simplicity
  • Interesting
  • Structured
Melissa
  • Minimalism
  • Fashion
  • Neat
  • Clean
  • Simplicity
  • Clear
We were then asked to swap groups and produce more lists about the similarities and differences between all of the ad's. This was a helpful task as it was interesting to see how people interpreted each other and what they came up with visually.
After this task we went back to our original table and looked at the lists which were put together by the others. We identified the common words which were said about each person.

Similarities
  • Simple
  • Clear
  • Structured
Differences
  • Layout
  • Shape
  • Pattern
  • Composition
Someone made a comment about how personality should be reflected in a design promoting that person. We argued the point as to whether this was correct by compiling a list of Pro's and Con's.

Pro's
  • Identity
  • Distinctive
  • Personal
  • Individual
  • Signature
Con's
  • Practice may not reflect personality
  • Personality may not reflect the signature of a designer
  • Personality may not be professional
  • Personality can become too dominant
Personally I think that personality is massively important within design but I am unsure that by projecting your personality onto your practice is a positive thing to do. I believe that everyone projects some from of their signature into their designs and within a persons signature lies a small part of their personality.

The relationship between your personality and your practice.

For this task we were asked to write 5 statements about :
  • What makes you you? Which things clearly state something about you as an individual.
  • What do we want to say? What things do you want people to know about your creative practice?

My favourite place in the world is a called Clapham. I spent a lot of holidays at this place when I was growing up. I also hold a lot of my fondest memories from this place.

I find that water is the best drink for me to have in any situation, it also helps me to keep my teeth healthy which has become very important over the past year.

One of my biggest interests is film. I am passionate about the film industry and the people within it. I think that film influences my beliefs and my interests massively.

\

Music reflects my personality significantly as I have a wide interest in different genres. Part of this is down to my parents playing me a wide selection of different songs/albums. The two which I have a deep emotional connection to are Shania Twain and Ronan Keating.

I believe that a lot of my personality is down to how I was brought up by parents. I am from quite a big family and from this I have feel that I have learnt how to share and not be spoilt. I also feel that, as my family are all different, I do not judge people before I know them.

5 statements about what we want to say as a designer

The area of design which I would like to go into is Editorial and Publishing. I have only recently decided this after producing a book for a previous brief. The audience I would like to produce editorial design for is sophisticated people with an interest in the arts and design. One of the most recent publications I have been drawn to was on the Creative Review website.

I have always been interested in designing characters and representing people digitally. I favour simplistic character illustrations which are very minimal. Part of this is because I am still developing my skills on Adobe Illustrator but I also feel that simplicity is something to strive for. I used Dean Gray's character heads representing the LCA tutors as my main inspiration for one of my first projects as I think his signature mirrors my own in some ways.

I have recently come to have a deeper appreciation for information graphics and the way in which information can be displayed visually. A designer I have come across in the past few days is David McCandless. He is a London Based information graphics designer.

Information is Beautiful

After being enlightened about the world of colour theory and the cost of printing I have a new found enjoyment of designing in black and white with the possible addition of one colour added. Almost all of the work I have produced since starting this course has been in black and white. I can appreciate the professional style which comes with the use of these colours.

Modernist design is something I favour the most. I love the simple and minimalistic style which comes with modernism. As I am beginning to learn about the use of grid systems I am finding that my interest in modernism is growing significantly.
